The Future Of Elder Scrolls
When Bethesda first released Elder Scrolls, I'm not sure that even they would imagine that the series was going to be as popular as it's become. At last count, figures show that over 40 million copies have been sold of the series to date, but what's next for the series?

Skyrim won game of the year and as been just as popular, if not more, than the other releases but is The Elder Scrolls coming to an end? With the future of gaming seeming to be all online, and The Elder Scrolls Online already proving popular, will Bethesda continue making games to add to the series or will it solely concentrate now on DLC?

I think no company ever dreams of such a success. I mean, they might know the game is good, well optimized and with quality, but that it's going to sell over 40 million copies and become a world phenomenon is impossible to predict. The big question is precisely next. For now, Elder Scrolls 6 doesn't seem to be a reality for anytime soon, and we have to feed on the existing rumors.

I agree that the company was certainly pleasantly surprised with the reception that they got and the sales too. Anything they can do to replicate that would be a good idea.

Even though the success the game had was immense and spectacular, i just don't believe they can even come close to replicating it.

I do agree that replicating the success that the Elder Scrolls as had will be difficult, but do they really need to? When a game first comes out, it does take time to build up that reputation but the Elder Scrolls as been going long enough now to have become established. Fans of the game will buy the next game in the series without thinking too much, so in that respect Bethesda have a somewhat captive audience.

That in itself can be dangerous, as if they know full well that the game will be a success no matter what, the temptation will be there to maybe not put as much effort into the game, and maybe that is what's happened recently. I'd like to see the Elder Scrolls continue into the future, but not if the standard is going to slip.

I think that when such a success happen they don't quite get how they did it, and attempts to replicate such a success might be possible or not. There is no magic formula to get things going. ;)

ESO has been only a modest success, hasn't it? The single-player game isn't going anywhere anytime soon regardless.

That said, Bethesda has been pretty constantly up and down, and the mixed success of Fallout 4 doesn't give me high hopes. We've also seen several entries in the open world genre that are at least adjacent to what Bethesda does - Metal Gear Solid V, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Horizon: Zero Dawn - that I hope they step up their game and bring us something excellent when TES6 comes around. The gameplay has always been second fiddle to the world design in Bethesda's games, and I think they finally have some competition on that front. Hopefully that will be a good thing for them.

Bethesda Softworks has been in the gaming scene since their debut sometime in the year 1986, and I don't think they'll be retiring anytime soon. Most of their games really made it big and has world wide fan base, like Fallout and Elder Scrolls. And their game engine, Creation Engine is one of the best if not the best out there. For Elders Scrolls, I think they should continue on creating more titles to keep the franchise alive.
